There isn’t. Maybe in the past, but they are retired or drawing blueprints in the sky.

The central gable with the little door under it makes me think it is a 2 unit townhouse or duplex, but I suspect it isn’t. Kind of faux craftsman, but not really, I guess this is PNW transitional style with the metal roof.

It’s the utter lack of symmetry or coherent design. Other than that, it’s fine.

Isn’t this why, like, city-wide ordinances exist? I don’t see Mill Creek allowing this clusterfuck of a design to exist, but maybe Mill Creek and similar cities don’t do that anymore.

The house is 1.5 million, but you will need another 3 million to buy the appropriate amount of stock in Windex.

I suspect in most areas, anything goes if you have enough money. Plenty of it in Bellevue, Mercer Island, even Medina.

Oh contraire, good sir. There is some upcoming action in Mill Creek.

homes under 5,000 square feet do not require a licensed architect’s stamp. anyone can design them. Certain states and counties may have different structural engineering requirements.
this is why there’s a ton of houses just a hair under 4,999 square feet and not too many 5,001 sf homes.

I liked how the gables were symmetrical then I realized they were not. Now I’m just looking at the blue cross trek with the ski rack and a white crown vic.

They’re not kamikaze-ing, they’re flying along until “OH SHIT THAT WINDOW CAME OUT OF NOWHERE, I DIDN’T SEE IT BECAUSE I’M A BIRD!”
I’d still be doing better than US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis .

If you look at just the right section, it almost looks passable. However taking in the whole building just makes it look like a mediocre small house was attacked by attacked by a giant ugly garage. I can see how that could happen as an addition that got out of hand, but as new purpose-built house, its pretty inexpiable, especially when it would have been so easy to have a symmetric design.

I’m not even arguing that it needs to be symmetrical. But look at the left and right gables. They aren’t even the same height. And the windows on the left share a common baseline, but the windows on the right do not. It’s just a hot mess.

It looks like they built a house, and then decided to keep adding houses until they got the square footage they wanted.

Definitely a contemporary vision of the potential of midcentury modern, not a thing that any midcentury modern actually achieved. And that’s why I want it.

I have a thing for mid-century and contemporary style houses. I like the interesting layouts, vaulted ceilings, and extra windows. The reality is that while they’re architecturally cool, the insides of them can certainly be dated. Contemporaries in particular can kinda look like bunkers, and here in Madison they often also look like timber lodges on the inside, but the structures themselves are nice and can be awesome with some updates.
I actually had recently done a search for houses with the vibe I like, regardless of price, so here you go. Many of these need a not-insignificant amount of updates, and they lean more toward contemporary than mid-century, but should give you an idea of my style.
625 Basswood Ave, Verona, WI - $329,900
3009 Post Rd, Madison, WI - $385,000
5830 Schumann Dr, Fitchburg, WI - $460,000
6241 S Highlands Ave, Madison, WI -$539,000
1137 Minocqua Cres, Madison, WI - $575,000
1820 Thorstrand Rd, Madison, WI - $595,000
413 Ozark Trl, Madison, WI - $689,900
2861 Henshue Rd, Madison, WI
- $695,000
(I like this one more for the land and the big outbuilding)
6117 S Highlands Ave, Madison, WI - $899,900

Thanks for bringing up that shit show. My state is stupid sometimes.
![]() 04/18/2017 at 17:07 |

Not bad! Little bit of midwestern prairie in those too. I live in an updated ‘50s modern, and opening up the floor plan to make a great room with floor-to-ceiling windows modernized it a ton. I’d love something even more contemporary like your original comment...not that I have the kajillion dollars such a thing would cost.

The McMansion Hell author would enjoy making fun of those columns. Huge square columns to support a tiny awning.
